Critical infrastructure protection (CIP) refers to preparedness and emergency response to events that could disrupt the critical infrastructure of a state or nation and affect the nation’s other important sectors. CIP management is crucial to protect breakdown of systems and networks of the infrastructure that could disrupt the normal functioning of various sectors. Simple computer programs like viruses, worms and Trojan horse can cause serious malfunctioning of processes that could send a whole nation into panic and confusion. Therefore, structures and systems need to be put in place to enable smooth running of operations or quick recovery strategies need to be put in place to deal with the effects of disruptions on the normal operations.
Department of Defense (DoD) is particularly responsible for protecting the relevant government’s critical infrastructure especially the assets acquired under DoD. These aspects could be potential targets for terrorists and enemies of the country. The inter-connectivity of various sectors is what makes an efficient and strong economy and could be an easy target for attack. Therefore effective CIP management structures should be put in place to deal with any eventualities that could cause a major setback to a nation.
